Namoki, Lawrence – “Crow Mother” Seedpot with Turquoise (1980s)

Lawrence Namoki has been known for a variety of styles in his pottery.  This is an earlier piece of his pottery from the 1980s.  It is a seedpot with a carved Crow Mother Katsina.  The story of the Crow Mother is:

Angwusnasomtaka (Crow Mother) appears during the Powamu (Bean Dance) ceremony in February to supervise the initiation of young boys into the Katsina rituals.

The Crow Mother is incised into the clay and highlighted with various clay slips.  The area surrounding the Katsina is slipped with clay to have the appearance of wood.  There is a single inset piece of turquoise above the Katsina.  The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Lawrence Namoki”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
