Lawrence Namoki was been known for a variety of styles in his pottery.  This is one of his classic pieces from the 1990s.  It is a jar that is both carved and painted.  The jar is entitled, “Walpi”.  The name comes from the village at the end of First Mesa.  This piece has a series of pottery “shards” that are painted onto the surface, much like finding the shards on the ground. Each section is different and separated by a black bee-weed painted lines.  Below the designs is a more deeply carved area slipped red.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Lawrence Namoki”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
