Nampeyo, Nyla Sahmie – Small Jar with Katsina Figures

Nyla Sahmie Nampeyo is a daughter of Priscilla Nampeyo and a sister of Bonnie Nampeyo, Rachel Sahmie, Randy Sahmie, Jean Sahmie, and Andrew Sahmie.  She is a great-great-granddaughter of Annie Healing and a great-great-great-granddaughter of Nampeyo of Hano.  This jar is coil built and painted with bee-weed and highlighted with a red clay slip.  The jar has rain designs on the rim.  On the sides are two Katsina figures (Longhorn Katsina).  They are each painted in the old style and highly detailed.  It was traditionally fired and so it has blushes across the surface.  It is signed on the bottom “Nyla” and a corn plant for Corn Clan.
