Nampeyo, Rachel – 9.5″ Wide Jar with Bird Wings and Dragonflies (1960s)
$ 1,000.00
This is an exceptional large jar by Rachel Namingha Nampeyo. She was a granddaughter of Nampeyo of Hano and a daughter of Annie Healing. She was the mother of noted potters Priscilla Nampeyo, Dextra Quotskuyva, Eleanor Lucas, Emerson Namingha, and Ruth Namingha. She was known for using traditional designs on her pottery and for continuing the pottery legacy of her grandmother. This jar has a round body and a short neck. It is the largest piece of her work we have had in the gallery and is exceptionally good form and well-painted. The jar has dragonflies around the neck. On the shoulder are bird wings. They are highlighted with seed and shawl designs. The jar is painted with bee-weed (black) and red clay slip. The jar was traditionally fired to create the coloration on the surface. It is signed on the bottom, ‘Rachel N. Nampeyo”. It is in very good with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. There is a white price tag from the past that wouldn’t come off without damage so I left it there. This jar is definitely among the best we have seen by this important Hopi-Tewa potter.
