Nampeyo, Tonita – 9″ Wide Jar with Moth and Mesa Design (1980s)

9"w x 6.5"h

$ 2,500.00

This is a classic large jar by Tonita Nampeyo.  She was a daughter of Fannie Nampeyo and a granddaughter of Nampeyo of Hano.  She was known for her traditional pottery using natural clay slips and bee-weed for the black.  This large jar is coil-built, thin-walled, and painted with bee-weed (black) and polished red clay slip.  The jar has a round shoulder and a short neck. The piece has a classic Hopi-Tewa moth design.  This imagery is one for which Grace Chapella was famous.  There are four moths, and each has a different design for the head.  The wings are polished red.  Next to each of them are three elongated shapes that represent the three Hopi mesas.  There are additional star designs.  The design extends down over the side of the piece.  The jar was traditionally fired for the striking coloration of the blushes.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Tonita Nampeyo”. The corn plant signifies that she is part of the Corn Clan.
