Naranjo, Elizabeth – 18.5″ Tall Water Jar with Carved Avanyu and 16 Feathers (1990s)

WOW!  This is a massive jar by Elizabeth Naranjo.  She was known for her large, intricately carved vessels.  This large jar is a striking shape with a very round body and an elongated neck. The neck has 16 carved feathers.  Below is a square cloud pattern with a deeply carved avanyu around the body of the jar.  The jar is highly polished and fired to a glassy black coloration.  It is an elegant shape with exceptional polishing and carving.  It is signed, “Elizabeth Naranjo”.  Elizabeth was a daughter of Pablita Chavarria and was known for her larger pottery.  However, this is certainly one of the largest of her pieces we have had in the gallery!

Elizabeth Naranjo was a daughter of Pablita Chavarria. She was also a sister of noted potters Clara Shije, Reycita Naranjo, Florence Browning, and Mary Singer. Elizabeth was known for her large vessels and deeply carved designs. She has won numerous awards for her pottery at Santa Fe Indian Market and her work is in museums nationwide, such as the Heard Museum and the Denver Art Museum.
