Naranjo, Louis & Virginia – Storyteller with One Child (1970s)

Louis and Virginia Naranjo were the parents of noted potter Mary Trujillo.  They were known for their storyteller figures, and especially Louis’s bears.  This is one of Virginia’s classic storytellers.  She began making figurative pottery in 1976 and had a stroke in 1980, so she had a very short time period of work on her own.  It is very tight in form and patined with wild spinach (black) and red clay.  It is a male figure and he is holding a single baby.  There is a lot of detail on the shirt and blanket.  It is signed on the bottom, “Virginia Naranjo”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Definitely a classic of their storyteller style.
