Madeline Naranjo creates beautifully carved and polished pottery. Each piece is pinch-built, carved, stone polished, and traditionally fired. She is one of the few Santa Clara potters who create pinch pottery instead of coil-built vessels. This jar is one of her larger pieces. The jar is entitled “Hummingbirds and Flowers”. The neck and base of the jar are fully polished. There are carved butterflies, hummingbirds, and flowers. It is a very complex piece in design. The hummingbirds are both polished and matte while the butterflies are all polished and highlighted with white clay. The flower petals are polished white the talks and leaves are matte. Madeline’s matte areas are sanded and perfectly smooth so that there are no indentations or areas where the matte might make a shadow. Her designs are always innovative and beautifully executed. The jar was fired red, which is always more difficult than firing black, but the tonality and coloration are striking. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Madeline Naranjo”
