Madeline Naranjo creates beautifully carved and polished pottery.  Each piece is pinch-built, stone polished and traditionally fired.  This small bowl has two parrots deeply carved into the clay.  It is interesting that Madeline often chooses parrots as a theme.  Interestingly, there were indigenous parrots in the southwest centuries ago, and today, there are parrot clans at many of the Pueblos and at Hopi.  There is a strong visual contrast of the matte and polished surfaces.  Madeline’s carving is exceptional with deep, crisp cut lines.  As well, her matte areas are sanded and perfectly smooth so that there are no indentions or areas where the matte might make a shadow.  Her designs are always innovative and beautifully executed.  It is signed, “Madeline E. Naranjo”.

Madeline Naranjo is a granddaughter of Madeline Naranjo. She has known for her deeply carved pottery, which is thin-walled and contrasts matte and polished areas to accentuate the designs.  Each piece is a coil or pinch-built, carved, and stone polished.  They are traditionally fired outdoors to create the black coloration.
