Navasie, Joy “Frogwoman” – Bowl with Feather Designs (1980s)

5.75"w x 3.25"h

$ 700.00

Joy Navasie was known for her white slipped pottery and classic use of design elements. She learned to make pottery from her mother, Paqua, who also used the white clay and signed with a frog as a hallmark.  The white kaolin clay is a slip that is applied to the surface of the bowl, and then black (bee-weed) and red clay slips are used for painting.  This bowl is a classic shape for her pottery with a wide shoulder and turned-in neck.  It is fully polished on the inside and outside.  The bowl is painted with four panels of design. The imagery has bird wings, feathers, and rain patterns.  It is highlighted with a dark red clay slip.  It was traditionally fired to create slight blushes on the surface.  The bowl is signed on the bottom with her frog hallmark.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
