Navasie, Maynard – Jar with Hopi Birds (1980s)
Maynard Navasie (1945-2003) was a son of noted potter Joy “Frogwoman” Navasie. He learned to make pottery from his mother. This jar is coil built and painted with bee-weed (black) and a deep red clay slip. The jar has three panels of design, each with a different style of Hopi or Sikyatki bird. The jar was traditionally fired. It is signed on the bottom with a Frog hallmark and his initials, “M. V.”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
