Gladys Paquin was one of the great revivalist potters of Laguna Pueblo. Each piece was coil-built, painted with bee-weed (black) and native clay slips, and traditionally fired. This is one of the largest pieces of her pottery we have had in the gallery It has a high, round shoulder and a short neck. The neck of the jar has a row of rainbows. Around the body of the jar are four swirling rainbirds and cloud designs. Note the use of the thin lines for the feathers of the birds and how they extend out to a rounded tail. It is a creative use of traditional imagery on her pottery. The jar is painted with bee-weed and two colors of clay slips The contrasting colorations across the surface, plus the matte and polished area create an exceptional complexity for this piece. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Gladys Paquin”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. Spectacular!
