WOW!  This is a striking large water jar by Robert Patricio.  This jar has a high, round shoulder and a sloping neck.  The jar is painted with bee-weed and different clay slips.  This is the first time I have seen Robert use this design.  It is both complicated and colorful.  The rim of the jar has a checkerboard sunflower design.  At the shoulder are birds with their heads facing downward, connected by bird wings.  The bottom has additional flower designs.  The contrast of the angular and round designs are exceptional on this piece.  As well, the use of the open space white gives the complex design room for the eye to follow from one design and level to the next.  The base is painted with red clay.  It is signed on the bottom, “R.  M.  Patricio”.  The jar is an exciting extension of his clay artistry and continues the amazing Acoma legacy.

““The pottery inspires me to keep going.  Keeping the tradition alive in making pottery, that’s how we were brought up.  Our ancestors started making pottery.  It’s amazing what comes of a piece of clay. Robert Patricio

Robert is the son of Doris Patricio and the brother of Doug, Israel, and Myron Patricio.  His great-grandfather was Santiago Zieu, and his grandmother was Helen Zieu Patricio (1911-1983).  His great-aunt was Marie Z. Chino.  His aunt (cousin) was Grace Chino, who taught him to make pottery.  Robert is known for his traditionally built vessels and for using traditional shapes and designs.  He has won numerous awards for his pottery, including "Best of Pottery" at Santa Fe Indian Market in 2010 and 2022!  Each piece is coil-built and painted with clay slips and bee weed (black).  Robert says he signs his "RM Patricio" pieces for Robert Marcus Patricio.
