Pena, Juanita – 10″ Tall Water Jar with Feathers and Avanyu (1920’s)

8"w x 10"h

$ 2,000.00

This is a striking long-neck water jar by Juanita Pena. This jar is a classic and early piece of her pottery.  It is fully polished and then painted. There is a feather pattern around the neck of the jar.  Note on the feathers, they are the early style with the rectangular “vent” of the feather in the center, not off to the side.  Around the body of the jar is an avanyu with her classic style with the elongated head and rounded “horn” on the back of the head.  There is always something so striking and fluid about her designs and how she was able to match shape and design with such elegance!  The jar is highly polished and fired a deep black.  It is in very good condition with no cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Juanita”.   This is one of the largest pieces we have had of her work in the gallery in years and an exceptional piece of history!
