Pena, Juanita – Jar with Carved Avanyu and Painted Mountains (1930s)

6.5"w x 7.5"h

$ 1,400.00

This is an exceptional long-neck water jar by Juanita Pena. This jar is an unusual piece of her pottery that combines both carved and painted designs.  The jar has a low shoulder and an elongated neck.  Around the top of the shoulder is her classic carved avanyu.  Juanita’s avanyu is a signature of her pottery with an elongated head and rounded horn.  Above the avanyu are carved clouds.  Along the neck are black-on-black painted triangular mountains. There is always something so striking and fluid about her designs and how she was able to match shape and design with such elegance!  The jar is highly polished and fired nearly gunmetal black.  It is in very good condition with no cracks, restoration or repair but with a few surface scratches expected from its age.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Juanita”.   Simply exceptional!
