Pena, Juanita – Red-on-Red with White Jar with Avanyu Design (1930s)

5.5"w x 3.75"h

$ 450.00

This is an unusual red bowl by Juanita Pena. The jar is one of her early shapes with a low shoulder and sloping side.  The piece was polished red and painted red-on-red to create the avanyu. White clay was used to paint the dots on the horn and in the clouds. The use of red-on-red with white clay most likely was originated by San Ildefonso artist Juan Cruz Roybal in the 1930s and was used by other potters as well.  It is in very good condition with no cracks, restoration or repair.  It is lightly signed on the bottom, “Juanita P.”.   Juanita created some truly exceptional early pottery with innovative designs, great condition and a wonderful history.
