Peters, Franklin – Water Jar with Heartline Deer and Rainbows

9"w x 7.5"h

$ 1,500.00

This is a very tightly painted water jar by Franklin Peters.  He is known for his thin-walled pottery and use of traditional Acoma imagery on his pottery. The jar is coil built with native clay and bee-weed (black) and red clay.  The jar is inspired by a historic piece of Acoma pottery (see last photo).  It is a piece that is currently in the collection of the Vilcek Foundation in New York City, NY.  the jar has two heartline deer on each side. They are facing each other and seeparated by flwoers.  Above them are raincloud and a double rainbow.  As the jar is turned, the three layers of rainbows extend down to the base.  It is a striking and fully designed jar with strong use of thin lines.  The jar has an indented base which is reminiscent of historic Acoma pottery when water jars were made to be carried on one’s head!  It is signed on the bottom, “Franklin Peters”.
