Pino, Kathy – Large Jar with Birds and Flowers (1980s)

10"w x 8"h

$ 600.00

This is a large Zia jar by Kathy Pino.  She was a sister of noted Zia potter Seferina Bell. She was a daughter of Ascenion Galvan Pino and Joe Pino and she learned to make pottery from her mother in the 1950s. While Kathy was not prolific, she was known for her traditional Zia pottery. Amazingly in our 25 years, this is the first piece of her work we have had in the gallery! She was not very prolific during her career but her vessels are well-made and classically painted.  This jar has a round shoulder and a short neck.  There are large birds on two sides of the jar, each slipped and stone polished.  Separating them are large flower and cloud patterns.  Again, the red is stone polished and there is a precision to the black designs.  The rim has a cloud pattern and the base is slipped and polished red. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Kathy Pino”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Definitely a rarity among Zia pottery, and yet striking in design and appearance!
