Thomas Polacca was a son of noted potter Fannie Nampeyo and a grandson of Nampeyo of Hano. He is considered among the first men to begin making pottery at Hopi in the 1970s. Interestingly, the men initially did not use the traditional Sikyatki designs but followed other directions in their pottery. This jar is very unusual. The top half is polished the natural color of the clay. There is a band of matte red clay and the bottom section is fully polished red and fully designed. The jar has cloud, rain and bird designs etched into the clay. Note how the background area which is etched away is textured. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Thomas Polacca”.
