Qoyawayma, Al – 17″ Tall Jar with Aztec Figure in Relief and Lid (1994)

10"w x 17" tall (w/ lid)

$ 20,000.00

This large jar by Al Qoyawayma is from 1994.  It is a large jar with handles, an elongated neck, and a complex lid. The jar is fully stone polished in a vertical manner. The figure on the front is repousse or actually pushed out from the inside!  After the figure is in relief, then Al sculpts the detail to the figure creating complex hair, feathers, and body.  Al said the figure is an Aztec dancer and is holding a shield with bird designs.  Note the detail in the shield and the feathers!  The lid has a complex shape and has the same bird design impressed into the clay.  It sits perfectly on the top of the jar.  This is one of the few jars in this style he has made with a lid.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Al Qoyawyama”.
