Qoyawayma, Al – “Majestic Maze” Tall Jar
This is a spectacular new tall jar from Al Qoyawayma. It is “Majestic Maze”. It is coil built and the pueblo scene is recessed into the jar! The buildings are amazing with exceptional detail. There is a textured pathway up to the tower and then another pathway up to the buildings in the background. There are five different layers of architectural design in this piece. It is this layering and levels from top to bottom that gives this jar its title. In front, the clay surface is textured to have a realistic appearance of the rock and sand which layer against many ancestral Puebloan buildings over time. The buildings are created by pushing into the clay and then the building is pushed back out from the inside of the bowl. In each of the building structures, there are wooden vigas and both keyhole and square doorways and windows. Al etches and then paints all the “bricks” that make up the buildings! This shape is one that certainly captures the feel of the Pueblo buildings. Al’s architectural pieces are among his most iconic works. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, ” Al Qoyawayma 2020″.
