Qoyawayma, Al – Large Red Clay Canteen with Hopi Figure (1977)

9"w x 8"tall x 7" deep

$ 5,500.00

This is one of the few canteens made by Al Qoyawayma.  It is from 1977, making it an early piece of his pottery.  It is made from red Hopi clay and the entire piece is fully polished.  The front has a large Hopi figure pushed out in the clay.  It is this “repousse” style that Al learned from his aunt, Elizabeth White.  Look a the the photos from the side, as the figure is VERY deeply pushed out in the clay!  Even the handles are fully polished. The canteen has a hand-woven strap.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Qoyawyama”.  Interestingly, this is only the second canteen in this style we have had by Al.
