Reid, Ulysses – Bowl with Zia Birds (2009)

Ulysses Reid is a grandson of Andres Galvan and his great-grandmother was Reyes Galvan. Ulysses has worked for the Pueblo of Zia language and cultural preservation program.  He began making pottery in 2004 and was awarded the Folk Art Apprenticeship Grant from the New Mexico Arts to work with his mentor, Rufina Panana.  He received a 2009 Dubin Native Artist Fellowship at the School of American Research.  This bowl is made from native clay and it is coil-built.  It is painted with four Zia birds and note how the wings are stone polished!  The bowl is signed, “U. Reid”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
