Romero, Teresita – 11″ Tall Jar with Cochiti Cloud Designs (1960s)

11"w x 10.5"h

$ 1,600.00

Teresita Romero was the grandmother or noted potter Diego Romero and painter Mateo Romero.  Throughout her career she was known for her large vessels and use of traditional iconography in her work.  This is the largest piece of her work we have had in the gallery.  The black areas are painted with wild spinach and the red with clay slips.  The red clay she used was distinctive for her pottery and had an orangish-red coloration.  The jar has a round body and a turned-out rim.  The designs are elegantly painted with flowers, rain, and rain cloud designs.  They are perfectly matched to the shape of the jar.  The piece was traditionally fired to create the coloration on the surface.  It is signed on the bottom, “Teresita Romero”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
