Jean Sahme was a daughter of noted potter Priscilla Nampeyo and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. This canteen has a shape inspired by a gourd with a round body and an elongated neck.  The jar is fully polished and then painted.  There is a large Butterfly Katsina as the design on the piece.  The painting is delicate and detailed, especially on the face of the figure.  The canteen was traditionally fired, which created blushes on the surface.  It is signed, “J. Sahme Nampeyo”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
