Jean Sahme was a daughter of noted potter Priscilla Nampeyo and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. This canteen is a classic Hopi-Tewa shape with a round front and rounded “lug” handles. The entire piece is fully polished. The front section has a double eagle tail design. It is painted with bee-weed and tail extend upward and downward. It is highlighted with polished red and orange areas. It is creative version of a classic design. The canteen was traditionally fired which created blushes on the surface. It is signed on the back with her hallmark fish, corn plant for corn clan and “Sak’Honsee”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
