Sahmie, Ida – Jar with Four Yei-bi-Chi and Four Sacred Mountains (2009)

6.5"w x 6.5"h

$ 1,400.00

This is a creative jar by Ida Sahmie.  The piece has a low, round shoulder and sloping neck.  There are four Yei-bi-Chi dancers on the jar.  Each is holding a bag for pollen and they are separated by a stalk of corn.  Each of the figures is next to one of the four Navajo Sacred Mountains.  Each mountain is a different color.  Below the shoulder are stepped cloud designs.  The jar is painted with bee-weed and clay slips and then areas are etched with design.  It was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface.  It is signed on the bottom, “Ida Sahmie 09”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Ida is the only Navajo potter creating this unique style of ethnographic pottery that captures the stories and world of Dine symbolism.
