Sahmie, Ida – “Navajo Life” Jar (2012)

5"w x 4.5"h

$ 1,100.00

This is an unusual jar by Ida Sahmie.  The jar is fully polished and painted with natural clay slips and bee-weed (a plant) for the black.    The rim of the jar has a polished red rainbow band around the rim.  Around the sides are scenes from Navajo life.  In the back ground are the four sacred mountains.  In front are a hogan, wagon, woman cooking, a man heading sheep (check out the cute little sheep!!).  There is a windmill, water tank and bathtub, horses, house, truck, and more horses.  The piece is very detailed and in the scene and figures! The jar was traditionally fired and signed on the bottom, “Ida Sahmie”.  It is from 2012 and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. Ida is a daughter-in-law of Priscilla Nampeyo and Ida continues to make beautifully formed pottery with wonderfully complex designs.  She has won numerous awards for her pottery at events such as Santa Fe Indian Market.  She is the only Navajo potter creating this unique style of ethnographic pottery.
