Sahmie III, Andrew – Jar with Butterflies and Corn (13 Years Old)

2.75"w x 3.75"h

$ 225.00

This is a small jar by Andrew Sahmie III (b. 2009), the grandson of Ida and Andrew Sahmie who is 13 years old.  He is both Hopi-Tewa and Navajo.  Ida brought in this piece of his work that is coil built and painted with bee-wed and clay slips. The jar has a round shape and a short neck.  The rim has lines for the four directions. The jar is painted with two large butterflies and two large stalks of corn.  The butterflies have stone polished wings. The corn is red on one side and white on the other.  The surrounding area is stippled with bee weed for the small dots.  Ida said that her grandson did all the work on the piece but she helped with the traditional firing.  It is definitely a charming piece by this young potter!   It is signed on the bottom, ‘Andrew Sahmie III”.
