Santa Clara potter Frances Salazar was known for her highly polished traditional pottery. This bowl is from the 1970s. It is a classic bowl with two impressed bear paws and the entire piece is fully polished. Note the style of her bear paws, as each artist has a distinctive manner in which they are either carved or painted in the clay. The bowl is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “Frances Salazar”. Definitely a great piece of Pueblo history!

Frances Salazar was a daughter of noted potter Flora Naranjo and a sister of Glenda Naranjo and Barbara Martinez. She was the mother of potters Elaine Salazar, Sophie Cata, and Yolanda Verde. She learned to make pottery from her mother and over the years won numerous awards for her pottery at events such as Santa Fe Indian Market.
