Salvador, Lilly – “After the Rain” Jar with Deer, Birds and Checkerboard (2010)

Lilly Salvador is known for her thin-walled pottery and use of native materials to paint her designs.  This jar is painted with bee-weed and two different red clay slips.  The jar is entitled, “After the Rain”.  There are two different Acoma birds on one side.  The opposite side has two Acoma deer.  Below them are checkerboard mesa designs and above them checkerboard rainbows. There are additional plant and rain designs.  It is very tightly painted and detailed for its size.  The jar has a fluted rim that is slipped a dark red.  All the various colors are from natural clay slips.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Maria Lilly”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
