Sanchez, Desideria – Jar with Rain and Cloud Designs (1920’s)
Desideria Montoya Sanchez was a sister of noted potter Maria Martinez. She was known for her traditional pottery and use of both classic and innovative designs. This jar is one of her early shapes with a sharp shoulder and sloping neck. The jar is painted with a series of cloud and rain designs. The rain is the thinly painted lines. The jar is highly polished and traditionally fired. There are some areas of gunmetal coloration from the firing. The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Desideria”.
