Sanchez, Russell – 8″ Tall Gunmetal Jar with Bear Paws, Bear Lid and 177 Stones

5.25"w x 8"h (w/ lid)

Stunning!  This jar  by Russell Sanchez has a creative combination of design, form, and firing.  The jar has a high shoulder and sloping neck.  The entire is fully polished, etched and then fired. It is the silvery, gunmetal coloration that is striking on the surface.  The rim of the jar is carved with a tiny triangular mountain design.  The neck has a matte band with hematite hei-shi beads and inset hematite beads.  Around the shoulder are 10 bear paws and rainbows, each with an inset piece of turquoise.  The shoulder is matte with additional inset hematite stones and hei-shi beads.  Below the shoulder are old style birds with complex checkerboard and feather designs.  All the etching on this piece was done before it was fired.  There is a bear lid with a single inset turquoise and inset hematite tones. The firing was outdoors, and Russell was one of the only Pueblo potters who achieved a gunmetal coloration. The firing is intense, achieving very high temperatures.  After the firing, the 177 stones and hei-shi beads were added.  The jar is simply elegant in form and design.  The jar and the lid are both signed on the bottom, “Russell”.  A wonderful traditional and yet very modern piece!
