Sanchez, Russell – Black and Green Jar with Rain Designs, 48 Hematite Stones, and Titanium Hei-Shi Beads

4"w x 4"h

$ 4,800.00

This is a new asymmetric jar by Russell Sanchez.  He continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery.  Each piece is coil-built, stone-polished, and traditionally fired.  The shape of the bowl has an asymmetric rim. The rim area is polished green (a clay high in copper), and the remainder is silvery black. The entire piece was first fully polished, and then it was traditionally fired black, and the green area was two-toned after.  Along the shoulder are 38 inset pieces of hematite.  Below the shoulder there the inside rain design with 10 inset hematite stones.  Most interestingly on this jar are three rows of colorful titanium hei-shi beads.  Russell said this was the first piece in which he included the titanium beads, but they look spectacular.  It’s exciting to see the continual evolution and experimentation in his pottery.  The jar are signed, “Russell 24”.
