This is a classic double-shoulder water jar by Russell Sanchez. The jar is coil-built, stone polished, and the designs are etched into the clay before firing. The jar is highly polished and etched with classic San Ildefonso imagery. Along the neck are plant designs. Below the shoulder are large rain clouds. Each of the rain clouds has been two-toned sienna. They also each have a large inset piece of natural high-grade turquoise. Around the shoulder are three bands of inset shell and turquoise hei-shi beads. Separating them are bands slipped with micaceous clay. The jar has a lid with a carved shell that is slipped with mica. All the stone and hei-shi beads are added after the firing. Russell is one of the few potters working today who is able to achieve this gunmetal coloration in his firing. The jar is signed on the base in the clay with his kayak hallmark from the early 2000s. This jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
