Sanchez, Russell – Black, Green and Sienna Bowl with Bear Lid

5"w x 6.5"h (w/ lid)

$ 6,200.00

This new bowl by Russell Sanchez reflects on his earlier styles but evolving the technique.  The entire bowl is fired black and then “two-toned” in two sections to create three colors.  Maybe it is time to give this technique a new name? If black-and-sienna is “two-toned” then this should be “tri-toned”?  The top half was slipped green, while the bottom red.  It was entirely fired black and then “two-toned” on the top for black-and-green nad then again for black and sienna.  There is always a complexity in slipping a piece with several colors of clay along with the risk of cracking when reheating it to burn away the black.  The central band is an incised checkerboard design that was slipped with black clay (like he uses in the polychrome pottery) and then reheated at the same time as the green and sienna.  On this piece, the checkerboard area is almost purple in coloration!  The bowl has a lid with a bear.  Russell inset a piece of natural dark Lander’s Blue Turquoise.  The black matrix and the black of the firing are a creative balance of color.   . It is signed in the clay, “Russell”.
