Stunning!  This “cliff” jar by Russell Sanchez has a creative combination of design, form, and firing.  The jar has an asymmetric shape with raised and indented areas.  The entire piece is fully polished and etched with designs before it was fired (see last three photos).  Russell calls this a “cliff” jar as the shape resembles the cliffs and mountains around San Ildefonso Pueblo.  Around the center is a matte band that is the river.  Above it is the avanyu (water serpent) encircling the jar.  The opposite side has a large Pueblo bird.  Near the base are etched clouds.  The designs are etched into the clay to match the shape of the jar and create movement.  There is one area with four raised ridges.  They are slipped with mica and cut into the clay, creating a jagged feel.  This same jagged edge is used above and below the band of water.  This is a new addition to Russell’s etching style.  The jar was fired to a silvery gunmetal coloration. After the firing, there are 126 inset hematite, turquoise, and diamonds into the jar.  There are two bands of hematite hei-shi beads that are placed on either side of the matte river band.  The jar is simply elegant in form and design.  The jar and the lid are both signed on the bottom, “Russell”.  A wonderful traditional and yet very modern piece!
