This is a striking lidded terrace box by Russell Sanchez.  The box is polished brown on the front with a rectangular red polished area that is etched with an avanyu.  The sides are polished green and each has an etched deer with an inset piece of turquoise.  The front of the terrace of the box is polished brown with a carved sun and painted lines.  The back of the box is polished red and etched with a sun and snow over etched trees. The white clay has a bit of texture and represents the snow.  There are nine inset pieces of square turquoise near the base.  The lid to the top of the box is polished green and red and has etched lightning designs.  There are two rows of shell hei-shi beads along with white clay, again representing snow.  It is amazing how many colors of clay Russell is able to use in his work.  There is a creative story that is told in his piece through both design and form.  The piece is from 2003 and is signed with his hallmark kayak from that time period.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
