Setalla, Pauline – 9″ Wide Open Bowl with Mudhead (1980s)
$ 400.00
Pauline Talasyousia (Setalla) (b. 1930) married Justin Navasie Setalla. She was raised in the village of Mishongovi and learned to make pottery from her mother-in-law, Agnes Navasie, and her sister-in-law, Eunice “Fawn” Navasie. She had ten children, including Dee Setalla, Agnes Nasonhoya, Gwen Setalla, and Stetson Setalla, who are all potters. This is one of her classic open bowls. It is painted on the edge with rain and cloud patterns. The inside is unusual with a large mudhead katsina. The mudheads are the clowns of Hopi katsinas. The bowl was traditionally fired so there are light blushes on the surface. The bowl is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed, “Pauline Setalla”.
