Pauline Talasyousia (Setalla) (b. 1930) married Justin Navasie Setalla. She was raised in the village of Mishongovi and learned to make pottery from her mother-in-law, Agnes Navasie, and her sister-in-law, Eunice “Fawn” Navasie. She had ten children, including Dee Setalla, Agnes Nasonhoya, Gwen Setalla, and Stetson Setalla, who are each potters. This is one of her large jars made from red Hopi clay. It has a wide shoulder and a slightly turned-out rim. The shoulder of the jar is painted with bee-weed (black) and has eight sections of design. They consist of rain and cloud designs. It was traditionally fired, creating slight color variations. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed, “Pauline Setalla”.
