Small, Mary – Polychrome Jar with Rainbows and Birds (1970s)

9"w x 6.5"h

$ 500.00

Mary Small (1940-2024) was known for her traditional Jemez pottery.  It is not just her painting that was distinctive, but the gray clay she uses is distinctive to her pottery.  This is one of the earliest pieces of her pottery that we have had in the gallery.  It is coil-built with a high shoulder and a slightly turned out rim.  The neck of the jar has a cloud pattern.  Around the sides is a rainbow along with birds above and below the rainbow.  The rainbow is painted with red clay.  It is creative design on an well-made jar.  It is signed on the bottom, “Mary Small”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
