Spencer, Lorenzo – Jar with Rug Design (1999)

4.25"w x 4.25"h

$ 175.00

Lorenzo Spencer is one of the few Navajo male potters.  He is married to Sue Williams and he learned to make pottery from his mother-in-law, Rose Williams.  This jar is coil-built and stone polished.  One side has a tightly incised rug pattern.  The area surrounding the rug has very tiny stippling which creates a great texture on the jar.  The remainder of the jar is the natural color of the clay and it is vertically polished.  The jar was traditionally fired to create blushes on the surface.  After it was fired, it was covered in pinon pitch in the manner of historic Navajo pottery.  The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Lorenzo Spencer”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
