Spencer, Lorenzo – Large Bowl with Heartline Bears (1994), Ribbon
$ 400.00
Lorenzo Spencer is one of the few Navajo male potters. He is married to Sue Williams and he learned to make pottery from his mother-in-law, Rose Williams. This bowl is coil-built and stone polished. The top part of the bowl is tan (the natural color of the clay) and the bottom half is red. The tan area has four incised heartline bears highlighted with red clay. The was traditionally fired to create the exceptional blushes on the surface. After it was fired, it was covered in pinon pitch in the manner of historic Navajo pottery. The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Lorenzo Spencer”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. This piece has a ribbon from the 1994 Museum of Northern Arizona Navajo pottery show.
