Suazo, Anita – Large Polychrome Bowl with Avanyu (1980s)

8"w x 5.25"h

$ 350.00

Anita Suazo is a daughter of noted potter Belen Tapia.  This is one of her few polychrome pieces.  It is a large bowl that is fully polished red.  It is painted with gray and peach colored clay and outlined with white clay.  Around the rim is a cloud pattern. The avanyu (water serpent) encircles the bowl in a complex pattern.  The designs are all painted on with clay and then outlined with white.  This is a style for which her mother, Belen, was famous.  It is very time-consuming to paint this style which is probably why we see so few of Anita’s pieces in this style.  However, they are certainly visually striking in appearance.  The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Anita Suazo”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
