Suina, Ada – 10″ Tall Male Storyteller with Twelve Children (1980s)

Ada Suina Suina (b. 1930) is a daughter of Berina and Eluterio Cordero sister to Stephanie C. Rhoades (Snowflake Flower). Her maternal grandmother, Estefanita Herrera, inspired her to become a potter, and her cousin, Virginia Naranjo, taught her how to make pottery. Ada is among the most famous of the Cochiti storyteller makers as she continues in a style similar to that of Helen Cordero and uses all native materials and fires outside. This large storyteller is a male figure who tells his stories to twelve children. Each child is in a different position and sense of motion on the piece. Typical of her work, note the mouth with the extended lips (much like the early pieces by Helen Cordero). Each figure is complex in design and style with the storyteller wearing a bolo tie and each of the children is dressed differently. The piece was traditionally fired. The storyteller is signed, “Ada Suina”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. While she no longer makes pottery, this piece reflects the apex of her career in terms of detail and precision in the clay. This is one of the largest, and most complex pieces we have had of her work and it is exceptional in person!
