This is one of the few pieces we have seen by Frances Suina (1902-1992). She was a daughter of Juan Roybal (San Ildefonso) and the mother of Louis Naranjo, Sarah Suina and mother-in-law of Virginia Naranjo. She was the grandmother of Mary Trujillo. She was an orphan at one year old and one of her sisters married into Cochiti Pueblo and she moved there with her. She began making pottery in the 1920s and continued through the 1980s. She began making storytellers in the late 1960s. Her pieces are very distinctive with large noses, outlined eyes, and oval mouths. This piece was originally purchased directly from her in the 1970s. The figure is one of the largest we have seen and it is a female figure with seven children. Each is in a different position. The piece is tightly painted. Note the eyes, eyelashes, and hands, that are all highly detailed. The piece was painted with wild spinach (black) and red clay on white clay. It was traditionally fired. It is signed on the bottom, “Frances Suina”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is a spectacular piece of her figurative pottery in size and design!
