Sunn, Mabel – 8″ Wide Jar with Rain Clouds (1960’s)

8.25"w x 5.5"h

$ 300.00

This is a striking jar by Mabel Sunn from the 1960s. The piece is made using a paddle-and-anvil technique and fired twice.  The black designs are derived from a mixture of mesquite sap and cactus spines.  Today, there are very few Maricopa artists making pottery.   Mabel was well-known for the relief snakes and frogs on her pottery. This jar is a more classic shape with a sharp shoulder and a short neck.  The piece has raincloud patterns painted around the top of the shoulder.  The jar is signed on the bottom, ‘Mabel C. Sunn”.   It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
