Sunn, Mabel – Red and Tan Jar with Birds & Lizards (1970s)

4"w x 4"h

$ 300.00

This is a unique jar by Mabel Sunn.  It is from the 1970s. The piece is made using a paddle-and-anvil technique and it is twice fired.  The black designs are derived from a mixture of mesquite sap and cactus spines.  Today, there are very few Maricopa artists making pottery.  This jar is unusual both in color and imagery.  The area around the neck is red while the remainder of the piece is tan or the natural color of the clay.  Around the body of the piece are alternating birds and lizards.  They are whimsical and rather charming in their design!  The jar is signed, “M.S.” on the bottom.   It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
