Celes Tafoya was a daughter of Legoria Tafoya and a nice of Pablita Velarde and Jane Baca. She often worked in collaboration with her mother, Legoria Tafoya, until her death in 1984. She also worked with her daughter Evelyn Tafoya. This form is often referred to as an “engagement basket”. The piece is carved around the body with an avanyu.  The handle is clay and it is twisted and fully polished. They are difficult pieces to make and not have crack during drying, polishing, or firing.  The jar is highly polished and fired a slivery black coloration.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Celes & Evelyn”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
