Tafoya, Jennifer & Chris Youngblood – “Whale of a Shark Tail” Water Jar with Whale Sharks and Sharks
$ 16,000.00
This is an elegant collaborative piece by Christopher Youngblood and Jennifer Tafoya. The piece is a water jar, with a high, round shoulder and a turned-out neck. The neck and base are both slipped with mica. What you can’t see is what you can feel, the jar is thin-walled for the size and depth of carving! There are 21 Whale Sharks and sharks carved into the piece. Each is fully polished and etched with designs. There is a beautiful flow of the sharks across the jar. I didn’t realize until I saw the piece in person is the amount of subtle coloration Jennifer added to the etched designs. The large whale sharks have blues and white in their complicated scales that are stunning! The jar was fully polished and then it was fired a deep, glassy black. After the firing, the jar was etched with a design and painted with clay slips by Jennifer. The details etched by Jennifer is exceptional! She creates such beauty in her realism. It is a creative vessel, but striking in design and amazing in the complexity of its levels of carving. It is signed by both Chris and Jennifer.
